David Brownlee shared insightful information on Horace Trumbauer, a prominent self-taught architect of the Gilded Age who greatly influenced architecture in the greater Philadelphia region.

Professor David Brownlee explores the context and social environment which influenced Wright's work and directly impacted the design of Beth Sholom Synagogue. Using Wright's original designs and sketches, as well as examples of automobiles and other influences, this lecture is an opportunity to appreciate Wright's work through the lens of the 1950's.

University of Pennsylvania Professor David Brownlee is an historian of modern architecture whose interests embrace a wide range of subjects in Europe and America, from the late eighteenth century to the present.

For the past decade, photographer Andrew Pielage has traveled the country capturing Frank Lloyd Wright buildings in his pursuit to photograph every remaining Wright site. Throughout his travels, he has photographed private homes, public spaces, museums, houses of worship, and more. Each building inspires him in different ways, but the one thing that is consistent is the spiritual quality embodied in all of them.

The show features over thirty photographs of Andrew Pielage’s work from a dozen Wright sites, with pieces selected to highlight the use of light, texture, and composition to create sanctified space.

This event will feature David Hollenberg exploring two mid-Century masterpiece buildings on the University of Pennsylvania's campus. These treasures have unique preservation and restoration challenges that mirror some of the issues facing Beth Sholom.
